BAD SAT SCORES (10 May 2003 at 11:53)
Some of you might remember that during college I talked a lot about going back and taking the SAT to try to get a perfect "0" score on it. (Since you lose points for wrong answers, this would mean getting every question on the test wrong, not just leaving it blank.)

Well, now some guy has already tried. It turns out that your lowest possible score is still a 400 -- slightly lower than the 470 or so that you'd get if you left the whole thing blank. Anyway, he ended up getting two questions right, and so he didn't get the worst possible raw score, but it is still a funny page to read.

Fortunately, colleges look at both SAT scores and GPA's; Therefore, if you have a very weak score of "1000" on the new sat,but a 4.0 GPA you'll be fine, likewise if you score "1800" and have a 2.9 GPA or higher your in very good shape. And guys never forget that once in college, even if it's a shitty community college if you manage a 3.6 GPA, you'll have a great chance of getting a scholarship and will be able to pretty much choose from any college you want to go to. I have a GED, "1600" on the new SAT, and a 4.0 GPA now in college. In 5 years I'll be in Harvard Business School. Currently, I'm in my last year at Morehouse College. " Never Worry about the things you have no control over only focus on the things that depend on you. And worst case you can retake the SAT, and this time just "study"!

I hate the SATs!!! Anyway for the people who kept on saying New SATs, did u guys get that score OVERALL (all three sections)...because if you're just talking out of 1600, they aren't so bad...

I suck at standardized tests no matter how much I study. I got a 2010 overall on my SAT. I got a 590 on Math IC (SAT II) ironically since I'm in AP Calc with an A average (again stupid test taker here) and 600 Spanish (I was Spanish Student of the Year for two years and got a 4.0 average in SUPA)...

It's just that sometimes the standardized tests scores don't match ur true ability as seen my most posts here.

My avg is a 3.9 something (my school doesn't rank) but I'm in the top 10% of my class.

I'm looking into schools like NYU and Cornell (this might be a stretch). Can anyone honestly tell me what my chances are with these types on scores and stuff.

umm.. i know that 1500 is the average score.. but really good universities like harvard and yale are looking for 2100 and 2200.. and for the guy who wants to get into yale with a low GPA and high SAT they wont accept you because that shows that you are smart but lazy.. so unless you work hard and get a good GPA you wont get accepted:(

Alright people.... Basically the SATS are messed up Its stupid how they dictate our future but they do. I got a 1560 on the NEW SAT I did get an 11 on my essay though. I'm applying to several colleges Ivys and non-Ivys. I'm already attending a University for my Senior year. I was a Congressional Page, 217 hours volunteer work 3.8 GPA did really really bad on SAT2s though. I'll let all you people know where I get accepted later so then maybe you can get an idea where you are. Just to let you know SATS and GPA aren't all that matter to a colleges.... sports, activities, community service play a big role in the application process. My sister is at Stanford. She got like a 1400 on the old SAT and a 3.8 GPA and did community service so you don't necessarily need perfect scores to get into good schools. Hope that somewhat helps you guys. Oh and if you get a low score and are all worried don't worry statistics show that the class of 2006 got the lowest SAT scores in the past 31 years... ( I did a research paper on it in college) Yes you guys... its because of the new SAT of course. Also think about it... Do you think famous people got fabulous SAT scores? A reporter asked Oprah her SAT scores and she refused to say... How come someone so influential be afraid to report SAT scores!!! So don't think your whole life is over if you did bad on the SAT. As TV's Conan O'Brien put it, "It has taken 20 years to forget the trauma of that damned test, and looking up my scores would be like going back to Vietnam." Retake them if you think you really did bad.

^^^you combine scores by adding the three parts from sat reasoning. bu subject scores are different b/c they're individual tests.

Alright guys these SAT/college acceptance things are really stressing me out as well. Let's see...it is true that you must have a good balance between your GPA and SAT scores, but in a few cases, those are not the only two things that determine your chances for admission. Most schools want to see that you are a well rounded student and are ready to take on all the challenges that college will throw at you. For example, last year, a girl from my school got accepted to UCLA with a score of 1600 (new scale) and a high gpa. she was a member of various sports, had a lot of ec's, etc...then there was a boy with awesome SAT scores, graduated in the top of the class, but got rejected because he had no "outlet." So since there is no exact formula to determine chances, the most we can do is relax because we can't really do anything about it now.

my stats:
GPA-3.9 unweighted, 4.3 weighted
1670 on SAT *hate standardized tests
top 4% of class
played varsity softball for three years
president of two clubs, vp of one, members of others
bunch of community service
essays could've been better

lol what are my chances at UCLA or USC...kinda considering oxy as well

i would appreciate honesty:) thanks!!

Well I'm guessing that IV or most competitve scores want at least an 1800 overall, and over 2000 is good too. But it's weird, because most schools don't even consider the writing section!! so it's just the math + critical reading that really matters...you wanna break a 1200 in that...

My question to anyone who has already been accepted or whose child has been accepted is that if my SAT I score is above 2000, with a 4.0 GPA, in numerous clubs (positions for 3: Pres, Sec, & Student Rep) and good recommendation letters...will bad SAT II scores (high 500s, low 600s) play a major part in decisions of colleges like NYU and Cornell?

I got a 2220 on the new SAT, I am getting a 3.8 GPA (unweighted), and I am in three AP classes. I am a junior with an array of extra curricular activities ranging from varsity level sports to trumpet. Here are answers to almost everyone's questions about what colleges they should shoot for.

SAT scores show your ability to REASON in three areas: Math, Critical reading, and Writing. Many students get great grades because they know how to play the "game" of school, but lack inherent reasoning skills in the important three areas and therefore score poorly on the SAT I's. Likewise, some students are very smart in these three areas, but are lazy. They will score high on the SAT but low on their report cards.

Addressing the IV league potential applicants, brace yourselves. The IV league-er gets above a 700 in each of the three parts of the SAT. So if you don't have a combined score of at least 2100, look somewhere else. You will still have a chance of being accepted into one of these prestigious schools, but then you will have to compete with minds more able than yours. I don't mean to sound harsh, but the SAT is somewhat proven to predict a student's success in college. Math, reading, and writing are fundamental aspects of college work. You are no longer babied with extra-credit work, and for those of you who HATE tests, you'll hate college. Your final exam, which will very likely contain a multiple choice section (Professors tend to be lazy graders), may very well determine your entire grade. This is yet another reason why you want to compete with peers with similar test taking abilities.

SAT II's indicate mastery in a subject area. If a college requires SAT II subject tests, they will definitley consider them. Again, see what the average acceptee gets before applying.

To address Oprah's SAT scores, you can still be very successful in life and still test badly. There are many aspects of intelligence, such as inter and intrapersonal skills. Sadly, skills demonstrated on the SAT are very important for college work. Life is an entirely different story.

On a final note, don't just look at your GPA when considering your college choices. Look at the rigor of your schedule just as much as your grades. A 4.0 in general courses is not all that impressive. Spice up your report card with honors and AP classes, and get to know your teachers. Letters of recommendation are very important for the selective schools.

I hope this helps.

Freshman w/3.5. Who knows. Junior year is difficult, and your GPA can either go up or down. But even if you don't slack, get a stellar GPA and great SATs, your chances of getting into the best college (Stanford, Princeton, Harvard...) are still at best 5-10%.

I got a 2030 on the NEW SAT, but I had very spaced out scores (two were in the 700s and one was in the 600s)

I think the 'anonymous' comment above (the extremely long, yet detailed one) says it all. Obviously, you need to be getting at least a 2000 on the NEW SAT to even attempt Ivy-League Universities, but above a 2100 is typical for any of them: [Harvard, Princeton, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, UPenn, Yale].

Don't worry though, there are over 4,000 Undergraduate Universities that are out there. There is a college for everyone, and don't be discouraged by low SAT/ACT scores, or by a low GPA. Extracurricular activities, personal statements(essay), volunteer work, job experience, athletics, etc. are equally as important.

Extremely selective schools rarely accept more than 15% of their applicants anyways. For example, Harvard only accepts 11% of its total applicants each year, meaning that out of the 15,000+ students that apply, only about 1,650 are selected. Schools like Tufts, University of Chicago, Stanford, Duke, Amherst, Williams, etc. are almost as good (if not as good) as the Ivy's, but are not as highly regarded because they do not have Ivy status.

Just remember that life is not based around SAT scores.

im a junior in High school (go to a very well know private school in CT). i havn't taken the SATs yet, but when i combined all my best scores from my PSATs i got a 1380. my GPA is kinda low (like a 2.20) but i do have a lot of ex cur activities ( varsity outdoor track, varsity bowling, bunch of clubs) And i know my recommendations would be very good (because all of my teachers and my guidance counselor know that i try hard and have a lot of spirit). I want to go to Western New England College in Springfield Mass (look it up on collegeboard.com for its stats). it has a high acceptance rate of %75. Say if i got a 1380 on my SAT and my GPA is a 2.20, do you think i have a chance of getting into a school like that?

i can't believe my essay score was so low ... i got a 7 ... and I usually write GREAT essays ... it's because i didn't use their phony SAT words that make the essay sound forced & unnatural ... and the section I absolutely HATE is the one i did the best on ... and I don't know WHAT happened in my math section - i got a 650 in it! my calc teacher was like 'whoa, what happened' ... i SO have to retake this ... i want these scores discarded altogether!

I'm a sophomore (rising junior) with at least a 3.9 GPA, which should boost back up to over 4.0 after I take my AP courses.
Reading: 730
Math: 610 (I'm ashamed)
Writing: 680
Essay: 8/12 (very disappointed, as I got an 11 on my ACT essay.)
Total: 2020
I scored a 217 on the PSATs, so my SAT score was disappointing. I was disappointed in the 30 I got on the ACTs. I studied for the PSATs and slightly for the ACTs and SATs, which shows.
Basically, my problem is math, which is ironic since I have a math professor for a father. I'm a sophomore, so my scores don't count yet, but I'm worried I won't be able to boost them up by next year. Except for my PSATs, all my scores are only slightly above average, and definitely not ivy league material.
I'm in three honor societies, soon to be four, and also in key club. Should I be worried?

try to get your sat score to at least 2200. i f you do, then you would have an excellent chance of getting into an ivy league school. However, sat scores are not the sole defining factor--there are other factors like the college essay, honors and awards, extra-cur, ap scores, etc. My advice: just try to get at least a 730 on each section of the SAT.
You are definitely on the right track!

The SATs really frusterate me.

I recieved a 1480, but I have a 3.85 cum GPA (unweighted).
I play two varsity sports, partcipate in a club called Medical Explorers because I really want to have a medical profession (preferably pharmacy because I love chemistry), secretary of the sports medicine club, captain of the varsity lacrosse team, and volunteer a lot because of sports med and medical explorers. I also run nearly every single day because of cross country.. I've also stayed consistent with my school's orchestra and we're actually outstanding in the state because we've usually placed first in a lot of the state competitions. Junior year was harsh and I'm about to become a senior.. I'm just scared because I want to retake the SAT in the fall. I think a tutor is definitely necessary..

The state school is actually really competitive and has raised its standards these past two years.... The only good thing that came out of the SAT is that I scored an 11 on the essay. The rest was.. well, baloney. My calculator also died during the first section when I believed that I put fresh batteries (apparently that was my other calculator that I own...)

I have read some worrisome comments here. Some of you seem devastated that you are stuck with not-so-good colleges. The anguish of some of you makes me very sad, because I have a 17-yr-old son who could be any of you. PLEASE LISTEN TO ME: I taught at Vanderbilt University in Nashville as a TA, my husband is a Vanderbilt trained physican, we are educated people who went to state colleges because we could not afford the elitist ones. We are doing very well in our 40s - thank you! Let me tell you something: go to the college where you are most likely to get straight As. So if you are denied access to Duke - where you would probably be swimming as hard as you could to come out with a 2.9, because the competition includes high school valedictorians from all over the place, you will be far better off at a state school and graduate with a GPA of 4.0. No graduate school, law school or med school will know what your ceiling really is! For all they know, you could have gone to Duke and come out with a 4.0 as well. They will think that maybe you did not go to a Duke or Vanderbilt because you couldn't afford it, not because of your grades. Now, if you go to Stanford andf come out with a 3.0 they will know EXACTLY where your ceiling is. I am not sending my son to a Vanderbilt/ Duke/Rice/Stanford/... He actually did well and had 2030 on his 1st SATs as a HS junior, but I have to consider his long term goals: he wants to do pre-med. As a white male, because of minority preferential admissions, he will always be at a disadvantage. If he gets a couple of Cs in college he may have to forget medicine. So, I want him to go to a good school, where he can get what he needs to do well on the MCATs and be appealing to medical schools, but where he won't have to struggle and forfeit all his other interests in life for 4 years, in order to get his As. Life is too short to be lived at a library when you are 19. So don't fret. A lot of classes at Dukes, Vanderbilts, etc., are taught by foreign TAs anyway - as in any big state university. Some science oriental teachers are hard to understand at both Vanderbilt and UT-Knoxville! So, go to a state school, save yourself the debt and have an easier time getting your As. That will keep your graduate school doors open. Now go and enjoy the life God has given you! Bye y'all

Sorry about the duplicate (long) comment... Website manager, can kindly you remove it? Thanks. One more thing: my brother had great SATs. He graduated from a 45K-yr university (with a GPA of 3.0) and he is now an rookie agent in federal law enforcement -making decent money, though not great. Monthly payments on his huge college debt are taking away valuable income that he needs now to buy furniture for his house and provide for his wife and baby. He wishes he had listened to me when I told him to go to the state university... Almost every time we speak on the phone he reminds me of how he "sold" his soul to that "most selective" school and how it was not worth it. He got the job he has because of factors such as: he went to a (dirt cheap) state school of Law, became an EMT, a master diver, good at martial arts, mostly because he speaks 3 languages, etc.. - none of it has anything to do with his undergraduate education. So the legacy from the "most selective" college is a debt of $50K. Beware. Unless you are wealthy, your "bad" SATs may be saving you from such debt.

Oh man, compared to what I've heard so far, some of you actually have good scores. I'm not focused so much on the SAT anymore. I scored really low: 480 in LA, 360 in Math, and 500 in writing, but most colleges don't accept the writing portion anyway. The ACT has better chances. For those of you who like Lit/Reading more, you should take the ACT because theres a Lit and Reading, but there's also science, and of course math, but the science portion is just reading charts. I got an 18 out of 36 on the ACT without really studying, and that's still pretty bad, but I plan to take it again. The SAT sucked ass, and it did nothing for me except for lower my self esteem. And Since I go to a magnet school--I'm not in magnet I just go to a magnet school- there's really no SAT or ACT prep classes because most of our magnet students score a perfect if not near a perfect score on the SAT/ACT the first or second time. So my school could careless about those who are non-magnetic. This just really sucks...I want to go school to major in movie production, but that's not going to happen because there's only about four really good art colleges in the area and non of them will accept a low score on the SAT, and I'm even at a greater disadvantage because I'm African American and the colleges only accept a certain amount of African American students a year. So I either have to be the very best or I'm nothing...and I hate going to school because I take AP classes and it's just so hard not to feel intimidated when I'm sitting in a class of 20 magnet students and 5 non magnet students and the only people the teachers have faith in are the magnet students. They don't think that the rest of us are going to make it anyway, so they figure we're not important. I mean the teachers are great, I had one of the best (and probably one of the hardest) AP US History teachers in the entire state of GA, and I came out with an 80 in the class. However, it doesn't mean anything because I probably failed the AP test, and my SAT/ACT scores don't reflect my GPA which is a 3.8 (weighted). I hate life.

All of you are so depressing. I mean, I saw this tv show a week ago where they were interviewing the admissions people from all the brand named schools. Dartmouth admissions claimed that they don't even look at the scores at all at first and just use the essays. Only after they split people into good essay and bad essay groups do they even glance at the scores. Dartmouth is the extreme case, but most of the other admissions people said the same thing in some degree.
What I'm trying to say is, scores count only for a teeny bit of your applications. The essays are more important, along with extracurriculars and your involvement in school.
For people trying to go to Stanford, visit their website. My counselor told me that their description of who they're looking for is extremely accurate. If you fit the description, you have a chance.
Hope this helped.

I'm a student in Australia and I just did the SAT I and I got a score of 2150. I'm planning to apply to all the Ivys. I do some volunteer work, sport and are in some clubs but I don't think I do as much as you Americans do. Should I retake my SATs and try to aim for a perfect score or just try to pick up my school grades? We don't have a GPA system so I don't know how to work mine out.

Well my kid just took her ACTs for the third time, and got a 17 out of 36 again. Yes, she read through a (different) study guide each time, and yes, she took an ACT course, and yes, she took practice tests. She tends to get anxiety with migraines with prolonged reading, but she's in AP calculus, AP physics and Honors English and she's in 11th grade, so she is getting an education. No, she's not the sharpest tool in the shed, but neither is she unusually dull. She will take the ACT again as many times as she needs to, in order to get the 20 out of 36 she needs for her college major, but she is not all whiny and pathetic like you young fools on this board. Neither are her parents. We know she will go to a solid third tier Missouri state college from home - the price is right and the education good - she will graduate debt free, and she have the remainder of her college fund for a downpayment on a house when she graduates. What is wrong with you folks that you are so bent out of shape over a lousy test??? Heck, her little sister, who does test well, plans to go to the same state college from home, so as to be able to have her college funds also stretch to cover a house. Let me tell you, they wouldn't stretch to cover a house if my kids were dumb enough to want to go to Harvard. Why all this angst and tears? I expect my kids to do just fine in life! You idiots actually seem to believe the nonsense the first tier colleges put out about how you have to go $200,000 in debt for THEIR college in order to have a good life. Nope. No way. Nothing like having the diploma, having the skills, having the cash, and being debt free to have a good start in life. You shouldn't need AP Calculus to figure that one out.

Hi, I don't know how often people reply to this forum since , but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I took the SAT twice and here are my scores:
-----1st-----
Critical Reading: 710
Math: 780
Writing: 680 - essay:7
-----2nd-----
Critical Reading: 760
Math: 750
Writing: 640 - essay:9

I have a 3.99 unweighted G.P.A, top 2% of my class, president/chair/secretary/treasurer of clubs, and work part time in a professional environment(vs. fast food).

Should I still apply to any Ivy League? If so, which one(s)?

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.

@*$% the SAT I took it once and got a 2110 (800 reading, 680 math, 630 writing) because i wasted hours of my life studying for it. Now my guidance counsiler has advised me to take it again, so im writing an essay ahead of time, memorizing it, and copying it onto the sat essay section about the SATs detrimental effects on society, and on the confidence of the many bright people who for whatever reason do not do well on it. Maybe if enough people did this it would have an effect who knows.

I agree that the SAT essay section (well, I'm too old to have taken that one, but I have taken similar tests) is garbage. The main reason is simply that I do not believe there exist objective criteria for evaluating writing, because brilliant writing does not come from a formula. It's especially pointless for college admissions, where the student gets a perfectly good opportunity to demonstrate his writing in the application.

Phil, doesn't the test ask you to write on a specific topic? If so, you'd probably fail it outright (I'm sure there are many other students who try the "memorize an essay" strategy, and that this is easy to detect) and your protest would only be half-heard by one person. A better option might be to write an op-ed letter to a newspaper. At least then a few dozen people will read it and you can actually put that thing on your college application.

Tom- Yeah it does ask for a specific topic, I'm planning on failing the essay. The point of it isn't to score highly on it, its to try and make a point to ETS. If I'm the only one who does this then it will probably go unnoticed, but if others do, it could have an impact. Of course I'm not expecting this to happen, I'm just trying to do my part in as many ways as possible.

Then i took the SAT again on Nov 3, 2007 and received a 1710 with a 10 on my essay. I studied for about 30 MINUTES A DAY FOR 2 weeks and took 2 DIAGNOSIS TESTS and 2 FULL LENGTH practice test.
I have a cumulative 2.96 GPA (i think weighted actually), and 2.8 GPA unweighted.
I applied to Cal STATE FULLERTON, ASU, and LIBERTY UNIVERSITY for early application and was accepted to all three. I will also apply to a few harder schools that i wouldnt think i would get into, since you never know.

Phil: I don't think ETS reads your essay--and certainly not the policymakers of the organization. I believe the grading is farmed out to high school teachers (or whoever) who are given a checklist that they use to grade you. Trying to make a point here would be like trying to make a point about traffic laws on your driver's license application.

Anon: I don't know if there is "leeway"; what I always hear is that there are enough great students around that the best schools get to choose which ones they prefer, since they cannot admit them all. I don't know if/which universities have quotas for domestic minorities, but I do think that they all prefer to have a student body made up of strong students from diverse backgrounds. I'm sure that they appreciate hard workers (but on the other hand, they appreciate rich parents too). The right place to make your case is the essay.

But, I'm certainly no expert in college admissions.

Know it or not, you've all already been accepted to a college, you all qualify for community college, HEY you wanted to know if you could be accepted and the answer is yes.

Can you live away from home and go to college, yes community colleges have apartments near them, pick a community college going for conversion to 4 year so when they transition over your already in their system and there is no hassle.

Take summer classes prior at a community college, lots of basic core classes, get A's, 4.0's and you'll then be considered a transfer student and these horrible tests won't make any difference at all. If your a good person and you want to do something, set your mind to it and go for it.

Good Luck to you all

On top of all that I volunteer with our local Red Cross Youth Board (Executive Committee) and some how I manage all this with a part time job. I recently took the SAT and recieved a 1730 (pretty mediocre, I know) Critical Reading: 570, Math: 570, Writing: 590. So I was wondering if NYU would even give my application a second glance?

Okay if your score is above 2000, dont bother posting because chances are, with that score, if you are a hardworker in your studies, then you will go to your "dream" college!! Give others with a lower score a chance, dont try to brag in their faces with your 2100s and 2240s or whatever. Those scores are great, but dont make others feel inferior. And if ppl are saying that they got 1250s and 1340s, why would you guys with high scores ask them if you can get into stanford and princeton with your 2100s? Thats cruel if you ask me.
--Those with low scores, make sure you study harder in your weak areas, without neglecting other areas though and i guarantee your scores will improve. Retake the SATs but not without studying and feeling more confident than the last time you took it. Goodluck and hope you get into the colleges of your choice.

if u dont get in the col of ur choice then consider givin it again...aim well above a 1900. TRY.
one only fails when one stops trying..

I got a 1980 out of 2400. Does anyone know if this is in range for Boston College or Villanova University?

I am SO nervous for college applications soon (I'll be a high school senior for 2008/2009) and, among other things, am nervous if my SAT scores might make or break my chances for getting into one of the colleges I'll apply to (see below for list). The following is my SAT scores from March 2008 (which was my first time taking it, BTW):

*Critical Reading - 510 (out of 800)
*Math - 570 (out of 800)
*Writing - 640 (out of 800)
*OVERALL - 1720 (out of 2400)

My choice of colleges are (in order) the University of South Carolina @ Columbia, University of Florida @ Gainesville, University of Central Florida, and the University of South Florida.

Other than that, my only other blemish was that I scored a 560 on the SAT II Chemistry test [P.S., I was busy studying for 2 AP exams, both of which I passed with a 3]. I bring that up because I want to major in science, preferrably chemistry or pre-pharmacy. As an added twist, I got an 'A' both semesters in Honor's Chemistry. Because I feared what kind of score I would get on the SAT II test, I did not send the score to any college. So, therefore, I have three fearful questions to ask about the SAT, overall:

1) Is a 1720 out of 2400 good enough to get into a moderately-difficult school like USC, UF, UCF, or USF?

2) If I did not cancel my SAT II score, but did (and will) not send it to any college, will any college know about my SAT II score? (HINT: similar to if a tree falls in a forest but if no one is around to here it, does it still make a sound?)

3) Will my "poor" SAT II performance play a role, if any, in college admissions now and in the future (especially considering that I want to be a pharmacist, one day)?

Thanx in advance, for any helpful information about my predicament.

I don't know about the other stuff, but I'm fairly certain that if you cancel/don't send your SAT II scores, that no school will ever see them. Even if they did see that you declined to send, that's so common that I doubt they even think anything of it.

those with SAT 1400-1500, enjoy community college or any college with a +90% acceptance rate. Those with SATS below 1400... Even those schools with 100% acceptance rates will think twice about taking you. But rest assured, I will think of you when I am chilling with my classmates at Princeton.

IMO, you'll regret having had this attitude at some point in your future.
