Eldred Petition
(04 Jun 2003 at 09:16) |
After losing the eldred v ashcroft case, the US courts affirmed that congress has the right to extend the length of copyrights arbitrarily (even though the constitution requires a "limited time," this limited time can be continually extended...). That's bad for the public domain. But Lessig and friends have proposed a new law that would require copyright holders to renew their copyrights (with a small fee) after 50 years, or else their work would pass into the public domain. They think, as do I, that this would significantly enhance the availability of public domain works. I don't really believe in petitions, but please sign this one anyway if you agree, too.
