Found: Maniac Mansion (03 Sep 2003 at 22:51)
Through random clicking this morning I found, by amazing chance, the answer to a puzzle that had been vexing me very slightly for ages. What was that weird show with the fly-head guy that I saw like one episode of when I was 10?

The answer is Maniac Mansion, perhaps the only sitcom based on a videogame that lasted more than one season. And doesn't the fly-head guy look kinda like Rob Schneider?

Yes! A wondrous show. It was on the Family Channel, and I watched many episodes of it. It had a cool (but odd) theme song: "Maniac Maaansion... Maniac Maaaaaannnnnnnsion! The Edison's... family!" etc.

The existance of the show was actually worked into the plot of the sequel game, "Day of the Tentacle", which is one of my favorite games. The family was cheated out of the royalties for the TV show, because Dr. Fred locked the contract in the safe and forgot the combination. Only by pushing a old lady down the stairs to get to the VCR to record the de-caffinated Dr. Fred sleepwalking and opening/closing the safe to learn the combination to get the contract, then have Fred sign it, send it back in time to get there before the show aired, can you then get enough money to buy the real diamond to power the time machine to save your friends and ultimately the world.

Even more amazingly, I saw the guy who played Dr. Fred at the airport just last night...

He's from Pittsburgh and is visiting his family now.

Indeed, I found him through the livejournal link from your friends page. Then I was like, "Maniac Mansion TV Show, sounds sweet!" And how sweet it was. It was almost as relieving as when I went back and beat that evil, troubling NES game "Faxanadu" that I could never beat as a kid. That game is fucken ridiculous, like if you go in the wrong door, then you might waste your King key that you have to go all the way back to some far-away town to buy, but then when you try to come back with the King key, you'll realize that you now need to get another Queen key, so you have to go back even farther in order to get one of those.

Tuuur: Schneider is that Saturday Night Live guy who starred in such masterworks as "The Animal" and "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo."
