[ Bathroom? Mushroom! ]
My problem has been recurring for over a year: waxy orange mushrooms about 4-5" across come growing up out of my carpet in my bedroom. I dug them out of the carpet, lifted the carpet up and treated the concrete underneath with bleach. Bleach is good for getting rid of black mold, but this fungus is a different animal! I have the mushroom: Peziza Domiciliana.... it is common to basements, moist carpets, bathrooms, etc (that's why they named it 'domiciliana' for house) and keeps growing back because it has white tendrils (the main body of the fungus) that grow underneath and can GROW IN CONCRETE, Sand, Wood, any floor material! I will try SALT, my landlord is not just clueless but doesn't want to spend a cent on repair. |

Some of the fungi mentioned on this page sound like they could be the fruiting bodies of dry rot, which is a serious problem which can spread throughout your house and cause masses of damage to the structure of the building.
Therefore, if you are having problems with mushrooms, I recommend googling for dry rot images & checking whether your fungus looks like any of these images. If it is, you need to dig out all of the wood that the fungus is growing into (and ideally up to 1 meter beyond where the fungus is growing) and treat the surrounding area with a boron based liquid or similar. A lot of websites about dry rot say that you need to call in a professional company, but if the problem is in the early stages this may not be necessary. I had a problem with dry rot under my sink following a leak (it needs wet not dry conditions!) and after fixing the leak & using the treatment above it seems to have died off.
If you own your house & you have dry rot it is particularly important to deal with it ASAP as if it spreads it could cost an absolute fortune to fix. Without wishing to scare anyone, it is sometimes refered to as cancer of the house because once it spreads it will keep coming back, even after treatment.
If you are a tenant, i guess it is not so important to deal with (I don't this there are very big health issues of living with it) but your landlord will probablly want to know and treat it before it spreads. Also, if it spreads into your floor, in theory it could get so bad your floor would fall in, although you would know that this was coming cos your floor would get a "bouncy" feeling to it first!
The good news is that not all the shrooms on here sound like dry rot! Good luck with treating them all! |

Between "Black and White (v2)" and "Black and White in Color"...
I can't believe it! Gil has made a modification of Tom's level and the style rating became lower! |

My sister and I have been renting a condo in Mesa AZ for about a year now. We have a fireplace in our living room, and the wall next to the fireplace, above the baseboard, is a tiny hole where we noticed mushrooms are growing from. There doesn't appear to be any water on the outside of the wall, but I didn’t know what's going on behind it. As we do not own the condo, and I didn't want to do any damage to the wall to check behind it myself, I submitted a maintenance request to the office we pay rent to have them send someone to check it out. So after my sister and I have been following up with their office for 2 weeks and have been getting the run a round, and attitude from them, I decided to call a local news station. Now, I am not a specialist, but I would think that mushrooms, or any kind of fungus or mold, is not safe to be around, so I question their long process in getting this resolved.
Landlord finally called back, sent a plumber, who found out that my dishwasher (which is on the other side of the mushroom growing wall) was leaking, and the mushrooms/mold spread from underneath the washer to the other side of the wall. Landlord will be replacing the dishwasher, but what about the mold behind it? They said they would have to get back to me on that... Well, the news station will be sending me a specialist to see how dangerous my mushrooms are and maybe then the landlord will do something about it. Wish me luck!!

I liked your video. I think very few live action/animated productions have this kind of depth of field, and it's really captivating as a result. It is, however, missing one thing: the eponymous Swedish Boy in all his suspendered glory. (Is the blond bearded dude supposed to be the Swedish Boy?) |

Well, on #2 fair enough. The title/topic was forced by the contest I was entering. If it were just a naked reference I wouldn't defend it (indeed I think pop culture references are highly overrated in terms of intrinsic humor/cleverness), but the point of that line is to set up for the "gonna have to hold" and "browser is too old" variations, which I do think are clever. Obviously YMMV.
#1 is funny because I definitely do hold back on swearz in tunez. I don't think because of prudishness (though there are still situations where it could be rude to be playing a song with swears in it). I just think that swears become pointless if you cry wolf constantly with them. I think it works just right in Spring Break Pittsburgh 2006 wooo (and is intended to be jarring) particularly because the Simon & Garfunkel tune that the line (and others in this song) is alluding to is such straight-and-narrow folk that the idea of the narrator saying "fuck that shit!" is so out of place and funny to me...
As always, analysis and criticism are appreciated. :) |
| |
Ha yeah. That's right. I don't listen to those early albums very often so I bet you do know the lore better. :) |
| |
Whoa, do I know more Tom 7 lore than Tom 7? "Yeah, they're gonna like this one" is from Welcome New Friend With Bomb. At least, I *think* that's what you're saying! |
| |
Thanks dude. A for Amateur has turned out to be a favorite of mine too, possibly just because I can play it without retuning. What is "Yeah, they're gonna like this one" from? |

I liked the whole thing......and the dancing flowers! |
| |
...And having said all THAT, now I actually think the easy Mario reference in PoJ is not nearly bothersome enough to overcome the otherwise MAX GOODNESS of the song. Marked it four stars. >_> |
| |
After you told me this was your gold standard album, I went back and tried to figure out why I don't appreciate it as much as some of your other albums. I think two things are holding me back:
1. The gratuitousish swearing in Spring Break Pittsburgh 2006 wooo. I know most people don't mind or actively enjoy swearing. But I am prudish and can't help cringing when an otherwise amicable song has swears apparently for the sake of having swears. (This is part of the reason I have avoided Jonathan Coulton somewhat.) Songs like Shithope are somehow okay for me, maybe because the swear is woven into the fabric of the song, not apparently added as a shocking embellishment.
2. I've had it up to here with "princess in another castle" jokes, and the general co-opting of retro games for amusement purposes. Generalized Super Mario Bros. Is NP-Complete is a notable exception to this because it is a masterpiece.
Of course, having said all that, I still think your songs are max-awesome and it is hard to come up with any criticisms at all when you're clearly doing all of this out of a pure drive to be creative. |
| |
These songs keep coming into my head. I think "your printout is wrong" from "A for amateur" is one of the all-time great Tom 7 openers. It's up there with "yeah, they're gonna like this one" and "okay I don't know why I drink San Pellegrino". The opener pops into my head and then the rest of the song just keeps going around and around all day. Thanks again for good songs. |

Welcome to my world just found these nasty things yesterday morning. They literally grew over night. There are so many people on here joking about it...Seriously mold is nothing to joke about. I just called my apt super and I am disgusted by the thought that my daughter is in my house right now. My boyfriend found them in the basement too.
Mushroom-like growth indicates that a wood-decay fungus of the group Basidiomycetes is present (probably in the walls). Exposures to a variety of species of Basidiomycetes can cause allergic responses and possibly asthma and sinusitis...
Not something to laugh about.... The use Bleach alone will not solve your mold problem. Walls where mold growth is occurring will have to be opened, infested materials removed and replaced, and water entry will have to be staunched. |

Very cool! I like the song too. The ambiguating depth of field effects on the spider are great, and the sheet music/piano stuff is an awesome touch - although I think the notes are only accurate if they're in bass clef instead (treble = Every Good Swedish Boy Deserves Fudge) |
