In a long-ago apartment, whenever my downstairs neighbors got too loud I'd pick up my weights and drop them on the floor really hard a few times. It shut them up, but fortunately never left a hole (much less a message-bearing Nebraska hole) in their ceiling.

I'd check but I don't want to void the warranty.

You think there's a message hidden in the ceiling?

There must be some hidden message there. That hole's shape reminds me of Nebraska.

Yeah, you know, anvils, pianos...

Oh my goodness! Are you sure you want to be taking that??

No, I think that neither is the case. If you want to say it as "yesterday" then it needs to be something that happened yesterday. And if it is currently 9 PM, then that means that it needs to have happened between 21 and 45 hours ago. But if it is currently 9 AM, then that means that needs to have happened 9 and 33 hours ago. So what I'm saying is, if you're going to describe it as "yesterday", then you need to do more than just calculate or round time elapsed, you'll need to take into account how far away you are from the bounds of yesterday.

The best one I saw was on a medicine I was taking. This was the entire text on the patient info sheet:

Side Effects:
Nausea or vomiting. Small
frequent meals, frequent mouth
care, sucking hard, sugar-free
candy, or chewing sugar-free
gum may help. Not hungry.
Sunburn.

Yes, you're right, it rounds down to the nearest second/minute/hour/day/week/month/year in the interests of brevity. Maybe it should round to the nearest value instead of always rounding down.

Okay, I see a little bug in your system. Right now, for me, this topic has a "yesterday" next to its "comments" link. However, Jan 1 was not yesterday, it was 2 days ago. But I also see that the comment was at 9:58 AM and it is now 9:46 AM (jeez, am I that consistent about when I check your radar?), so I'm guessing that it's some rounding duration thing you're using to get the "yesterday" value (since the duration has been like 1.99 days) rather than figuring out if it actually was yesterday or not. Well, whatever's going on, it is currently wrong, so I just thought I'd poing that out...

It's 2006, so you can click an even number of times and then stop clicking!

Yay, thanks! Even better than as I suggested (time elapsed is a more immediate form of the information that I'm looking than date/time).

3678. Mike Nolan (71-81-217-80.dhcp.stls.mo.charter.com) – 01 Jan 2006 01:16:19 UPD: Radar ]
Well I'm not going to stop clicking it until it goes away.

You're right, but once I got it working I was like 'sweet!' and left all icing for 2006.

Neato. I think it would be intuitive if clicking again also closed the pop-up, but maybe that won't scale to other uses.

It comes from chess puzzle lingo. A puzzle is "cooked" if it has more solutions than intended. One who finds such an unintended solution "cooks" the level in doing so. Does that make sense?
