I can't seem to upload my new level with the Mac OS X version... hmmm.

That puff test is showing up in more places than ever--Statue of Liberty, even. When we asked the security folks about it, they said it is "sniffing" people, the puffing can detect chemical/dangerous odors. All sorts of possibilities for jokes here...

this is so bizarre, we have mushrooms growing in our bathroom. We just moved in 3 months ago and the house was inspected and the property is only a year and a half old. There is no evidence of any leaks, but i have two small children and am concerned not only for possible health hazards, but also the cost of remediation. And who do you call, a plumber or mold remediation company? I was just going to do some bleach action today, but wonder if that is useless? Whats really wierd is that mine appear to "blow up" with black dust showing up on the floor (by the way they grow white colored like any other mushroom and they grow and "die" in a matter of hours).

I think that there actually may be some tape overdrive and/or compression type effect plugins out there, though I haven't tried one, but something like that kinda rings a bell in my memory... like maybe something called Magneto? I think it might be some long-abandoned Mac OS 8 software at this point, though. Anyway, maybe I should actually look into that, now that I'm interested. It might be too hi-fi, though (like emulating high-end real-to-real tapes rather than cassettes), I wouldn't be surprised.

And I haven't thought about serializing mic preamps, I've done it! But I never thought of it as that clever, I mean, with some sound sources, they're not high enough to get them to overdrive without running it through another preamp. I've probably done it while you were there, too...

I dunno.. my guess is that guitar overdrive would be too extreme, or at least too different. Probably someone could reproduce the "effect" using existing tools, but what I'm really looking for is digital recording equipment that fails gracefully (when used in a sloppy manner, as I often do) like tape does.

Can't you get a same kind of effect by singing through a guitar overdrive?
I'll try that one with the Proco Rat I borrowed; to be heard on my next AAD, planned to be recorded soon.

Also, my personal experience is that breakups, how painful they may be, result in great songwriting.

Thanks for listening, william!

Yeah, I don't understand why there isn't a good plugin for doing "4track like" compression and overdrive. That'd be high on my list, if I understood DSP.

Were you really thinking about serializing mic preamps? Man, I thought I was pretty clever when I did that.

I thought it was just like, more relaxed vocal cords, but yeah, that was probably the first I talked to anyone that day.

Funny about the overdrive, cuz for some reason I've just been thinking the past few days how I miss tape overdrive and how putting mic preamps in sequence and overdriving them just doesn't do it nearly as well as recording to tape way past its limits. That and varispeed recording I think are the 2 things that I miss about using a 4-track (but otherwise prefer about 600 other things about recording to computer). Well, and tape's "natural" compression is kinda nice, too, except when it's not, and you have no choice, which in the end isn't good I guess.

People's voices tend to be lower for a little while after waking up, do to gunk in our throats not yet jostled out or something like that.

I really like the guitar background on "Blue Period", not to mention the bizarro lyrics. And of course, "Fire Tom Murphy" is an instant classic! :)

Yeah, I actually used two mic preamps in sequence to get a nice overdrive without digital clipping. I kept the same Cubase session open for the whole weekend, so at least the settings were mostly the same, but I have troubles with levels impatience in general. ;)

I'm glad you think it's listenable. It was pretty painful to make, comparatively speaking, so I was worried, but I think I am coming to the same conclusion too.

My guess is that redlines refer to the recording level which sometimes crosses the clipping line.
I think this is one of your more listenable albums to date.
'Fire Tom Murphy' is my favorite, and I like 'Aloof' as well.

You mean like, lower in pitch? Depends on the time of day, I think. But yeah, much harder to sing that low.
