Uhh, I just thought of something... did you do this with the new text player file format? I changed it a while ago, but I don't know if I did a release with it.

catamorphism, I disagree: I think that the use of 'they' as a singular pronoun caused the speaker to be confused. There are, however, many other ways of saying this, including perfectly good uses of 'they' (like you point out).

There's no need for the singular here, either. "...okay to diss people because they're women..." would have been just as good.

It's not "they" that's the problem -- "diss people because they are women", or "diss people because they are female", would be completely correct.

"They" is a good pronoun when the gender is unknown or irrelevant. As for this speaker, they have taken it too far. :D

2277. Tom 7 (gs82.sp.cs.cmu.edu) – 29 Mar 2005 16:58:40 They are a woman ]
That's part of my point: aside from all of the problems with this sentence, the pronoun 'she' works great because we're talking about women! Why not just use it?

Yeah, I have done that before, and I think it's a decent solution to the problem. But there's no information about that in the call for papers, so I guess I have to wait for press time, if I'm lucky enough to have it accepted this time. ;)

2275. Max (ce-web3.wesleyan.edu) – 29 Mar 2005 16:50:42 They are a woman ]
Actually, I think there are many reasons why she sounds like an idiot here, including the use of the word, 'diss'.

Really, it's just her idiotic construction of the sentence in the first place more than her use of the TATPSP, because "...because he or she is a woman..." would probably sound even more idiotic...

That's a good idea! Papers that aren't too great (like the ones I write) could have fewer pages, and ones that are better could be alotted another page.

Can you buy a page? I've heard you can do that with some conferences.

2273. Tom 7 (gs82.sp.cs.cmu.edu) – 29 Mar 2005 16:11:36 They are a woman ]
And, ironically, that last post came from when I was working on the submission for the prequel of the paper I'm editing now. Get back to work!

Anyway, it could be worse; see: http://radar.spacebar.org/f/a/weblog/comment/1/603

Well, I think even the higher-end projectors are DLP, just with faster color wheels (and more "white" channels) so that the rainbow effect is lessened or gone.

We're just projecting onto a wall.. I'm not that rich. ;)

2270. roger (64.95.24.239) – 29 Mar 2005 10:32:32 Very Big ]
Yeah, I think "cheaper" is a more effective term than "better" here. Though we can all agree it's good to be able to buy a projector for under $1K. Sometimes the RGB alternation is visible, for example when your eyes move quickly to track an object or to jump to a new line (e.g. watching subtitles), and thanks to POV for an instant you see the three layers of light separated out. It can be a tad annoying. But like I say, not too bad a price to pay for a six-foot TV under a grand. Do you have one of those cool screens with the glass beads? It's a lot brighter than projecting onto a wall.

The ratings-sender is done! Thanks for your help.

I didn't quite have the energy to attempt to build Escape, so I just ended up writing a little console app. If anyone else out there in escape-land would like to have it, just drop me a line (mike AT thinkingpart.com).

(I guess they never updated the final scoreboard!)

We came in third. Another team solved 8 puzzles, but got more "points" from solving early. The first place team solved the meta-puzzle.. we were ignoring it, but eventually all the extensions caught up with us. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the result.

I can't figure it out. Who won?

"they might be giants" is pretty unusual in being an entire sentence. maybe I should start a band called "I wonder what happens if I push this button?"

I kind of like "income deli" and "sky or deli" for its unusual grammatical structure for a band name.

2264. Tom 7 (lolo.wv.cc.cmu.edu) – 26 Mar 2005 18:43:18 Now Picnic Activate! ]
Good band names generated during brute force search for answers to "fill in the blanks":

come spy in
i hack pops
i pinch i do
income pit
non bolder
non bopper
nun pepsin
once i bold
only i bold
ooh snider
poncho dip
ski sniper
sky or deli
sun slider

Also, I should mention that your ratings won't be reflected in the game immediately (certain things on the server trigger an update of the index files), but you would be able to see them in the level browser on the web page.

2262. Tom 7 (gs82.sp.cs.cmu.edu) – 22 Mar 2005 19:00:37 NEW: Escape Beta 2! ]
I don't have any objection. It would be pretty easy to do within escape itself, so you might even try that (supposing it compiles on your machine).

The server is just apache, so it will accept any user-agent.

2261. mjn (pool-68-161-18-172.ny325.east.verizon.net) – 22 Mar 2005 16:30:08 NEW: Escape Beta 2! ]
Since I play offline, I've been thinking of writing a tool to send in all the ratings from a player file. Would you have any objections to this? (From the source code, I gathered that the server just replaces old ratings from the same player, so am I right in thinking there's no serious problem with potentially re-sending ratings many times?)

If this is okay, then I have another quick question: will the server accept a GET request if the agent isn't "escape-xxxxxxxx", or should I spoof that?

2260. Tom 7 (h-68-166-177-37.phlapafg.dynamic.covad.net) – 21 Mar 2005 19:38:26 NEW: Escape Beta 2! ]
Larry: believe me, I know. ;) I plan to implement it, but it's actually a bit of work, since the "you died!" message currently can only accept "Enter" or "Esc" as input. If you save a lot with 's', you can always restore after dying with 'r', and you can always undo from that point.

I'm glad you like the game!

2259. LarryMurk (ool-43508ccc.dyn.optonline.net) – 21 Mar 2005 16:32:46 NEW: Escape Beta 2! ]
It would be nice to be ableto undo when you die.

Great game.
