Space Survey Response (08 Apr 2005 at 17:11)
46. Do you have any ideas for adding some "SCS personality" to the new building?

the corridors are illuminated by an elaborate matrix of fiber optic cables, beaming sunlight through a steam-powered "difference engine" that computes, at a pace of one symbol per second, digits of the binary expansion of the golden ratio. these symbols are then transmitted to the occupants as glittering pulses of light dancing within the otherwise mute sterility of its concrete qua concrete fireproof halls

47. Any suggestions for technology to include in the new building?

NP-oracle

48. Do you have special wishes or ideas in terms of architecture, aesthetics, or general functioning for the building?

optimally, the building would be construed as an enormous royal blue lowercase 'e' with a galactic swash encircling it, meant to symbolize the kinetic grace of thought that takes place within.

NEW: His Sophomoric Effort (06 Dec 2004 at 01:53)
NEW: His Sophomoric Effort
Phew! I am delighted to announce that, after a month of gruelling late nights and a week of editing, scanning, and graphic design, I have finally finished the first edition of His Sophomoric Effort. The cover is shown above in quantized 8-bit glory. You can check out the novel's home page to download it or you can order a nice softbound copy from lulu press (don't fear, CMU web police: I make no money off this! It's just for fun!), which is pretty cool. Or you can just ignore it but wow, then that'd be a whole lot of work for nothing!

CSD Logo Submissions (07 Sep 2004 at 17:58)
CSD Logo Submissions
These are the logos I submitted to the competition to select a new logo for the Computer Science Department (CSD). I am actually not that good at making "general purpose" long-term logos, since my style is a bit more whimsical. (But it would be nice to leave some kind of mark on the department, and to help ensure that the logos don't end up being terrible!) Since these will be voted for by a general CS audience, I'm here trying to appeal to geeks by having rotational symmetry (you'll notice both logos are inversions) while not not being totally hideous or inappropriate for printing. Supposedly the whole logo selection process is to be completed by October 1.

You can check out my submissions here.

Tom's room in High School (02 Oct 2003 at 00:08)
Tom's room in High School
1790×1170 version
When my parents visited this weekend they brought a box with them that had a bunch of my old stuff. One thing was this photo of my old room in high school that I took before leaving for college (and turning the room over to my younger brother). As a sort of memory game I went over the (rather poor) image and tried to identify as many things as possible. I think I did pretty well! Click on the thumbnail for the full image (about a megabyte file).

World Commerce Center (12 Aug 2002 at 08:58)
World Commerce Center
1165×854 version
No matter your architectural and civil engineering background, you can now you can submit your proposals for new buildings at the world trade center site at CNN!

My proposal, like most of the others, is far beyond "structurally unsound", will totally ruin the skyline of New York City, and is dominated by a maudlin "America" theme. But mine's a different kind of America theme, can you guess what?

Here's the caption I sent with my entry:

I propose a spacious and aesthetic replacement for the twin towers. The inverted-pyramid design allows the area at the top of the tower to be twelve times as great as the actual area of ground zero. This gives room for a gigantic shopping mall and food court encased in a glass atrium on top, as well as office space for thousands! The entire structure will be supported by immense steel cables, as a testament to the iron resolve of our country.
