Artbus: Solidarity?
(01 Dec 2005 at 12:40) |
1200×448 version Phew! Well, that took a long time, but here is my submission for the Pittsburgh "Art in Transit" project. Pittsburgh artists are having their work displayed in place of advertisements in buses around town. I'm not sure when they'll be displayed, but since I passed a qualifying round earlier, I understand that this is pretty much guaranteed to show up in buses around pittsburgh. Please let me know if you see it!
Click on the image for a bigger (but still not very big) version. If you want to zoom way in, you can also try this 7.7 mb TIFF (16,800 x 6,600), which will probably crash your computer or this 53kb flash file which looks better anyway.
(PS. Hint I'd like to send back to myself at 2:00am last night: Photoshop has dithering enabled by default when converting between color spaces. Dithered files are huge, and take a lot of memory! Turn it off under the advanced color management settings. Wow, look how you don't run out of memory and hard drive space any more, keeping you up all night!) |

Hello? What are your coordinates?
(22 Nov 2005 at 01:02) |
Hooray! We made it back to the Connecticut. The drive went pretty smoothly—those dual gas pedals we had installed really hit the spot. My mom and dad and doggy stayed up to greet us, and I guess tomorrow or wednesday there will be a further confluence of siblings. Mike and I have planned a series of coordinated familytime gags that will seem impromptu and clever, but which are actually premeditated. There is not that much to do in the car, after all.
The image above is a poster I made for Adam's birthday, which was yesterday. Happy birthday Adam! |

Pictures from Brian and Sarah's Wedding
(01 Nov 2005 at 18:33) |
I uploaded the good pictures from Brian and Sarah's wedding (see this post). You can see them here: Wedding '05
The picture above is from my first screen-printing experiment, kept secret because the object of the experiment was to create these matching 'his' and 'hers' shirts for part of my wedding gift for Brian and Sarah. These are characters from my game Escape, which Brian and Sarah have been known to play. I wanted to make them something personal, you know? As you can see, I am not a very good screen printer, but it was my first time... Thanks to Jason for showing me the ropes and loaning me some ink!

RDR 2005 Tees
(05 Apr 2005 at 02:18) |
I always tell myself I'll remember to link these things up after the event passes (not wanting to "spoil" the surprise), but then I forget. No more.
This year I made the "Random Distance Run" t-shirt design, just like the last two years. The random distance run is a new tradition in the CS department; we line up on the track on race day, and the length of the run is determined by the roll of two enormous fuzzy dice (rolled by one of our local theory luminaries). The front of the shirt depicts an unlucky roll. The back of the shirt is filled with groanworthy computer science in-jokes set in the context of fictitious "sponsors" of the race. Since I don't think I posted them, you can see designs from 2003 and 2004, too. |

Here is a Walking Escapist
(30 Jan 2005 at 23:37) |
Unless you count Zelda or Halo 2, this is about the only thing I accomplished this weekend. Boy, it is sure easy to spend a long time tweaking low-res animations pixel by pixel. This is for the new animation (not yet visible) in my puzzle game escape. |

UPD: Illustrated Notes from Computer Science
(07 Jan 2005 at 20:51) |
I made it back to Pittsburgh. I am currently cleaning up Last Year stuff in preparation for the new semester. I found a bunch of good notebook pages from 2004, which are now at Illustrated Notes from Computer Science. |

NEW: His Sophomoric Effort
(06 Dec 2004 at 01:53) |
Phew! I am delighted to announce that, after a month of gruelling late nights and a week of editing, scanning, and graphic design, I have finally finished the first edition of His Sophomoric Effort. The cover is shown above in quantized 8-bit glory. You can check out the novel's home page to download it or you can order a nice softbound copy from lulu press (don't fear, CMU web police: I make no money off this! It's just for fun!), which is pretty cool. Or you can just ignore it but wow, then that'd be a whole lot of work for nothing!

I am nice
(21 Nov 2004 at 23:06) |
Recently I've done a lot of charity illustration for projects I'm not really involved in. First I made a logo and then DARPAified diagram for a new project that advisor Karl and officemate William are doing. (Disclaimer: It is universally agreed that the content of the second diagram (not my idea) is totally lame.) Today I made three drawings of robots for the CORAL group at CMU, which I have even less to do with. But drawing robots is pretty fun! (I really like the way the aibodog came out, of all these drawings.)
More importantly, I have just surpassed 40,000 words in my novel. I still have 600 words to go for my quota today, but 40k is an important psychological barrier. Unfortunately, I am a bit behind on illustrations; I had planned to have a lot more than I do (only 12 so far). But it looks like I will be done in time to create a bunch before nanowrimo ends on Dec 1. |

CSD Logo Submissions
(07 Sep 2004 at 17:58) |
These are the logos I submitted to the competition to select a new logo for the Computer Science Department (CSD). I am actually not that good at making "general purpose" long-term logos, since my style is a bit more whimsical. (But it would be nice to leave some kind of mark on the department, and to help ensure that the logos don't end up being terrible!) Since these will be voted for by a general CS audience, I'm here trying to appeal to geeks by having rotational symmetry (you'll notice both logos are inversions) while not not being totally hideous or inappropriate for printing. Supposedly the whole logo selection process is to be completed by October 1.
You can check out my submissions here. |

I made a web page for our team this year. It has a nice drawing of an ant on it.
