Pac Tom update: March 2008
(30 Mar 2008 at 16:04) |
1007×867 version
I haven't done one of these updates in a while. I slowed a bit while I was writing my dissertation (also it was cold and I do not really want to run in snow or on ice) but never gave up! Recently I have been getting serious again, running a long trip (usually 13–17 miles) almost every weekend. These long ones are basically a necessity now, since it's a (say) 7 mile minimum trip just to get to (say) downtown and back, and that's on roads I've already done! Long is fun, though. I'd like to be able to run a marathon this year, and if I can find some solution to this knee pain that comes on at like mile 15, I think it is within my grasp.
So if you flip between this and my first post on the subject you can see my progress in 11 months. Not too shabby. (In that post I claim knee pain after 10 miles. Maybe it is getting stronger then?) I like how the network of routes diverge like blood vessels from my apartment in Shadyside. Some numbers: I've run 1533.5 miles total in 8 days, 18 hours, 51 minutes. Certainly not all of that is for Pac Tom, but most is. I think I have gone through 5 pairs of sneakers since starting ($620!). |

Wanted: CS/Math/etc. puns, attendees
(29 Mar 2008 at 20:23) |
I have once again been asked to create the Random Distance Run shirt and for that I need your bad/great computer science and math puns. Post them here for screen-print glory. For examples see the five (!) shirts in this directory.
Also: Nels and I are playing as Sick Ridiculous and The Sick Ridiculous at the SIGBOVIK pre-afterparty tonight (Saturday) at 10:30 or 11ish. We have prepared 6 lovely songs including a special surprise. You are invited to come but since it's at someone else's house I'm not going to like post his address on the internet. Find it on Facebook or text/call me for details. |

Up-to-date: Album-a-day
(22 Mar 2008 at 12:33) |
Wowza, I knew I was behind on album-a-day updates, but when I finally got around to posting the backlog (and I was doing this thing where I don't pee or eat until I'm done even thought I definitely need to eat and pee because of all of the coffee) I realized that it was over a year overdue! Now the album-a-day page is up to date. We can have a little party because this last batch of updates (53) put the total count (388) past 365, which if you think about it, means that this project has wasted/enriched a whole person-year of music making. (OK, not really, since most people do not spend the whole 24 hours making music. But it is symbolic, dude.) I apologize to all the AAD faithfuls for taking so long with their albums. The main reason for this is that I have a half-written automated version of the AAD submission process, so the idea of doing this manual cut'n'paste business is extra off-putting.
Another thing is, someone mentioned in the submit comments that he had heard about AAD in an NPR segment about National Novel Writing month, which also mentioned AAD. Did anyone else hear this or know where I could find it?
By the way, since it's been about 10 years since last time, I have begun ListenQuest Maximus 2008. This is where I listen to all of my CDs in their entirety (I have like a thousand??). You can tell that I'm doing this because it is the only occasion in which I listen to the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers soundtrack that I ill-advisedly bought when I was a They Might Be Giants completist because it had one unreleased song on it. So, like, do not take my recently listened box as any kind of recommendation for the next several months. |

Sick Ridiculous and the Sick Ridiculous
(15 Mar 2008 at 12:23) |
You may already know this if you read a few other web logs or if you carefully stalk my last.fm profile: Nels and I have a new band and now I fixed the part of my web radar software where I can upload images again and here's a lightly doctored by me band promo photo that my brother Mike took. And here are all of Mike's best photos of us, and here is our totally pimp myspace page which has a few recording test demo songs (you can tell it's a test when I screw up in the first second of the song but keep going anyway). Wallet-size glossies, more sloppy recordings, and a intra-Pittsburgh open mic tour coming soon. |
